What is Science Based Long Covid?

This website and social media is dedicated to science communication with respect to long covid. Communicating the results from scientific studies in a way that is easily understandable, so we understand the nature of long covid, and find therapies and treatments that are likely to work, without harming us.

We will also tackle pseudoscience and look at the treatments that are recommended on social media, but should be avoided at all costs. Helping save time money and effort pursuing treatments that do no good, and worse make us susceptible to harm.

What is long Covid (LC)?

This is the term some people use when COVID-19 symptoms last longer than a three months.

Which symptoms are most likely to persist?

This is not the same for everyone. But the main symptoms reported by more than 50% of suffers are, including the rough percentage of LC patiences that have that symptom.

Fatigue/Feeling very tired 98%
PEM Post exertion malaise 88% Symptoms increasing after mild physical or mental effort.

Cognitive Brain Fog 85%, Poor attention 75% Short term memory loss 65%, Trouble thinking clearly, focusing, or remembering 56%

Pulmonary shortness of breath 77% Dry cough 66% Trouble breathing 60% Sore throat 60%

Chest discomfort Palpitations 76% (feel like your heart is racing, pounding, fluttering or like you have missed heartbeats.) Tachycardia 62% (heart rate over 100 beats a minute)

Sleep Insomnia 70%

Muscular
Aches 70%

Motor Dizziness/balance/vertigo 67%

Gastrointestinal Diarrhoea 60%, Loss of appetite 52%

Systemic Elevated temperature 57%, chillis/flushing/sweats 55%

Emotional Mood Anxiety 57%, irritability 52%.

Other physical symptoms that are far more likely in people with long covid:

Hair loss (4 times), loss of taste or smell (1.5 times),
decrease reporductive health (2.5 times), and sneezing (2.7 times).
(times more likely for LC patients compared to non-LC controls)

Supplements vs Long Covid

The supplements industry is the wild west. Here is the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I have seem plenty people in a lot of long covid groups that are taking lots of supplements, you might be one of them. These are seen as safe and potentially effective. This is important when there is very little on offer from medical doctors, and science hasn’t come up with anything that works against long covid (SIM01 being one exception).

People with long covid are desperate and will try anything, but is this approach to supplements worthwhile? Is it a waste of money, just making expensive wee? Could it actually be putting us at risk.

I wanted to research supplements against long covid and supplements in general. My conclusion is the supplements industry is the wild west, so lets see what is good, bad, and ugly about supplements. Spoiler alert, it is mostly ugly.

“The use of dietary supplements is widespread. Many of these supplements confer no performance or health benefit, and some may actually be detrimental to both performance and health when taken in high doses for prolonged periods. Some supplements contain excessive doses of potentially toxic ingredients, while others do not contain significant amounts of the ingredients listed on the label.”

What treatments are there?

Here we have categorised treatments in order with things at the top being best, and low down the worse.
Getting into basic colour codes. Green, Amber and Red.

Green it works, and is something all long covid patients should aim to do.

Amber, potential treatments that might work, there is a small amount of evidence for, and relatively low risk

Red, we know this doesn’t work and/or it has risks that outweighs any potential benefit. AVOID!

Treatments

463 participants, Double blinded, placebo controlled trail.

Very promising results for the use of synbiotic supplements against long covid. This is the most promising data I have seen so far for anything against long covid.

Very encouraging results for alleviation of:
fatigue (p=0·0001, 0.01%),
memory loss (p=0·0024, 0.24%),
difficulty in concentration (p<0·0001, less than 0.01%),
gastrointestinal upset (p=0·0014, 0.14%),
and general unwellness (p=0·0008, 0.08%)
compared with the placebo group.

What Trials are there?

Lots of long haulers are desperate for a cure or some help with symptoms. Some even experiment on themselves after hearing about potential treatments. I would not recommend this, most trials fail to produce positive results and by experimenting on yourself, you could easily do your self more harm than good.

Here I am keeping track of trails on long covid trials. Hopefully in due time some of these will move into the potential treatments page.

At the moment we should let the professionals do the experiments, and not make ourselves the Guinea pigs, espically when we are not properly monitored.

Big well constructed trails, RCT, phase 3 and beyond
